Taxi Squad thoughts
Just thinking out loud here. thinking with rookie contracts now being 3 yr deals as opposed to 2, you may not want to give up on a taxi squad guy after 1 yr of lackluster performance. we've got 5 spots currently, with the expectation that you would be drafting a handful of new potential taxi squad players each yr. expand to 6 or even 7 man taxi squad was my thingking....

Re: Taxi Squad thoughts
my thought is that you're allowed a 6th guy (clearly this should've been passed IF AT AT ALL BEFORE THIS DRAFT) ONLY if you keep a guy from last yr's draft and a 7th guy ONLY if you keep a guy from 2yrs ago going forward. this last part is impossible only for the time being, as 2 yrs ago those rookies were at the mercy of the auction and not a set rookie wage scale, hence cam's insanely sweet deal (for which keith would sell his Miami condo...sorry, Pembroke Pines). In the meantime, if you want to give up on your rookies after a year, then I'd be glad to pay you pennies on the dollar

Re: Taxi Squad thoughts
Yes in order for this to go into effect it won't be until next yr, this would of needed to have been brought up earlier when the other topics were up for discussion.
My initial thought on this is that you have the 5 spots at your disposal and your not required to send every pick down to the Taxi Squad. It gives you the benefit of waiting the full season plus most of the off-season (up until auction) to decide if you want to axe them in order to make more room for guys on your roster to demote. OR if you want you can always keep the extra guys on your roster as we allow up to 31 during to auction and then you can make your cuts prior to contract deadline and then demote who you need to demote.
Now, personally I love more roster spots myself so I am not opposed to it. I would say let's gets some more input on the total figure before we put it to a vote to go into effect next yr. Keeping in mind that guys need to either be promoted or cut after 2 years of being on the taxi-squad to begin with.
Ryan, you have an interesting proposal although the "7th guy from 2 yrs ago" doesn't work since you can only be on the Taxi Squad for 2 yrs. Additionally I don't get why it matters what year they are from. Not saying I hate it, just don't get the thought behind it.
Let's keep this topic going. Def want to put it to a vote before Auction for next season.

Re: Taxi Squad thoughts
Piggybacking of Ryan's thought, why not just have the 6th AND 7th guy have to be from the previous year's draft? At least that'd give teams more of a chance to "develop" their draft picks, instead of having to cut ties prematurely due to roster size constraints.
Maybe you could have FIVE 1st yr taxi squaders, THREE 2nd year taxi squaders, ONE 3rd year taxi squaders (I realize you'd need to change the rule on allowable time on taxi squad.) Just firing off ideas.

Re: Taxi Squad thoughts
Are you ONLY ALLOWED 5 1st yr taxis then? You wouldn't be allowed to have 6?
BTW I totally want more players on rosters as I feel this gives owners who spend more time and prep a better chance. So I am on board w. the idea just trying to understand the restrictions on what yr a guy is drafted.
For example, say I hate next yrs draft class and unload all my picks, and say I get a couple of current taxi-squaders in return why should I not be allowed to groom those players? Or is it basically you get 5 and after 1 yr you need to promote or cut 2. After yr 3 you need to promote or cut 2 more.
I guess that makes sense the more I think of it.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who likes the basic premise. I think I like where you're going Bear. And I fully understand this would never be allowed to go to vote for this yr. I didn't have the thought till post draft, so just getting it started

Ryan - you are outspoken looking forward to your rebuttal. How about anyone else? I'm hoping that with the link to the league homepage slider it wil generate a little more buzz.

Re: Taxi Squad thoughts
Adding a couple taxi squad spots seems like a good idea. I like the idea of 5 1st year taxis, and then diminishing from there. I think it needs to go down quickly as I want teams to have to make a decision with there picks and not keep a ton of rookies for three years and then one develops in year 3 when they would have ordinarily been cut.

Re: Taxi Squad thoughts
OK so unless we hear another idea by September 1st the proposal that will put up for change will be Bear's. You will be allowed 5 players with 3 yrs remaining, 3 players with 2 yrs remaining and 1 player with 1 yr remaining.

Re: Taxi Squad thoughts
I like 5 spots. These are no risk and very little decision making involved..till now. With 3yrs deal, some tough cuts may start next yr. I could be talked into 6. But def not more than that. Taxi is a luxury to begin with. Tough decisions to be made even in developmental system.

Re: Taxi Squad thoughts
I love the idea, but this is a huge jump that really dilutes FA, which is already tough sledding for offensive guys with recent roster expansion. Going to be a tough vote for me, we have plenty of time to work on tweaking numbers for next year.

Re: Taxi Squad thoughts
I get your point, but this is a rule that helps people like yourself who invest time in knowing the rookies and additionally ability to identify high upside players. Doesn't take away from high-end players in auction just means the owner who is more knowledgeable will do a better job.
Teams that don't know their ass from their elbow will suffer for sure but I wouldn't classify you into this category.
I understand Steve's point as well which is why I like Bear's proposal because you do need to decide who needs to be cut or who needs to be promoted in yr 2.

Re: Taxi Squad thoughts
I never really understood the 2yr max on taxi squad anyway. If an owner is patient, and has 3 yrs to decide on extension, then he shouldn't have to cut someone that still has real potential...especially with common 3rd year numbers jump for WRs/TEs

Re: Taxi Squad thoughts
9 still sounds like a bit much, but I voted for it despite your specific number because I agreed with the premise to expand taxi squad and that was the only option at the time. Should owners still be allowed 5 taxi squad guys from any draft class though? This kicks in if they wish to exceed 5 OR is this just a way to get some young'ns into the free agent pool no matter how many picks we trade from the upcoming draft?

Re: Taxi Squad thoughts
I thought this was by far the best option and on the surface 9 sounds like a lot but I think when you consider 5 rounds getting drafted every year you need to have space for the players. Now being forced to drop 2 or move 2 guys up every year is the "strategic part".
I think that it should be 5 - 3 -1 meaning you need to make a decision on 2 guys after 1 year (if the litter is full). Adds to strategic element and yes adds the holla back young'n who who's into the FA pool.

I prefer Hoody Hoo with Master P, but I know you like touching who who's.
